What you pay for
- A seat is a licensed member mailbox in your Microsoft 365 directory, meaning the people who send mail.
- Shared and resource mailboxes are free: they're unlicensed, so they never count towards seats, even though they still get a signature.
- Guests and disabled accounts don't count.
Your seat count is read from your directory automatically, so you're only ever billed for the mailboxes you actually have. The count goes up and down with your organisation, with no manual seat management.
